The method involves maintaining a constant ink quantity by delivering a corresponding uniform ink quantity flow from an ink source. The ink flow is reduced or increased from a first to a second value, in which an ink quantity flow is delivered during a transition time interval, which is under or over a target value corresponding to the second value. The target value is fixed according to the first and second ink quantities. During the transition time interval between the two desired values, the ink flow is adjusted to a third value. A fictitious ink quantity between the first and second ink quantities is interpolated. A new transition time is determined. The ink flow quantity during the new transition time is fixed according to the third and fictitious ink quantities.
