Printer has transparent image transfer material (4) on to which ink (12) is applied on the same side as a radiation (13) absorbing coating. Depressions (2) in the surface of a rotating image cylinder (1) have a coating that completely absorbs the radiation and the transfer material transfers the ink on to the surface of the image cylinder as the material moves with the same speed as the cylinder. In addition radiation from the radiation source is targeted on the surface of the transfer material away from the image cylinder and the power of the radiation source can be dynamically adjusted, while a heater is user to cause the transfer of the ink on to a print medium from the transfer medium.
