The invention relates to a method for detecting and evaluating the time pattern (SV) of a signal, including means for carrying out said method, during which the signal curve (SV) is recorded in particular zones in a digitalised form and is subject to a calculation, in which a mathematical function suitable for describing the causal, physical process for the signal curve is optimally approximated to the signal curve. The cross-correlation coefficient between the signal curve and the approximate function (F) is subsequently calculated and compared with a cross-correlation set value characteristic for the physical process and the mathematical function. It is assumed that the above physical process has occurred, if the value of the calculated cross-correlation coefficient exceeds the cross-correlation set value.
