Tannin in waste water from wood processing is recycled by adding acrylic acid or other unsaturated monomer and an initiator, and polymerizing to form a tannin-containing acrylic resin useful as a retanning agent. Process for recycling tannin present in effluent liquors resulting directly or indirectly from the processing of wood, comprises adding an unsaturated monomer with at least one C=C bond to the liquor, and adding an initiator to the mixture to initiate polymerization.
