The safety catch (21, 22) on the firearm (1) is held in the safe position until released by an electronic lock. The electronic lock is fitted to the stock of the firearm, and has a keyboard (37) set in the side of the stock to allow entry of a secret key which releases (32) the safety catch mechanism, allowing normal operation of the firearm.
