The machine has a positioning system (13i,13'i,18i), for each cutting and lifting unit (7i), which includes sensors (14i,17i) delivering row (5i) position signals. A controller (16) using these signals controls the position of each unit so as to maintain them in an optimal position for cutting and lifting the crop. The machine has a number of units (7i) designed to move over and along a row of vegetables (5i). The units are fitted with foliage cutters (8i,9i) and vegetable lifters (10i,11i) which cut and lift as they are moved over the rows by a vehicle (1).An individual unit positioning mechanism (13i,13'i,18i) incorporating sensors is fitted between a frame (2) and each unit (7i) adjusts the transversal and vertical position of each unit with respect to each row.
