The evolutive fixed image decoding technique has incoming encoded binary trains (110) from a number of image mosaic areas. The command components of the trains are first decoded. A process of evolutive decoding (113,116) is then carried out for each block, and the decoded commands used to create composition sets. The outputs are applied to a wavelet decoder (114,117) providing output image sets.
