The steam generator comprises a casing (204) having upper (206) and lower (208) heads and an intermediate part (210). A rupture plate (224) located on the upper head is designed to release the generator pressure when the internal pressure exceeds a pre-specified level. A cover gas (228) is retained in an upper part of the generator comes down as far as an upper end of the outer shell (212). During a transitory climb in temperature of the reactor the rupture plate gives in to a pressure of about 69 kPa and releases the cover gas through the upper head.
