Controlled contact pressure for a scroll compressor back-pressure chamber seal

A seal arrangement 50 for a scroll compressor back-pressure chamber comprises a pair of U-shaped seal jackets 52, each having an inner coil spring 54. A sheet 55 is placed between each seal jacket 52 and a rear surface 40 of a scroll. A tab 58 extends from a planar face 56,60 of the sheet 55, so that the pressure gradient from the pressure chamber P acts only over the limited thickness of the tab 58, reducing the sealing contact force between the seals 50 and the rear surface 40 and prolonging seal life. Alternatively, a single sheet (94, Fig 7) having inner and outer tabs (96,98) may extend across both seals (90,94).
