PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a melanogenesis suppressing agent having strong melanogenesis suppressing action and pigmentation improving effect on skin by including a specific glycoside as a component. ;SOLUTION: The objective glycoside of the formula (G is a residue of monosaccharide or oligosaccharide; R is a 1-8C alkyl) [e.g. 4-propylphenyl-D- glucoside (β-isomer)] is produced by condensing a 4-alkylphenol with an acetylated sugar in an organic solvent such as toluene in the presence of a catalyst such as boron trifluoride or phosphorus oxychloride and eliminating the acetyl group in the presence of an alkali. The glycoside can be compounded to pharmaceuticals, quasi-drugs, cosmetics, etc., in an amount of preferably 0.05-10.0wt.%. It is especially preferable to compound the glycoside to a skin- beautifying cosmetic for ameliorating pigmentation of the skin.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
