PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material that can form a high quality thin film with a high refractive index, a coated film formed by using the coating material, an antireflecting film in which the coated film is used, and an image display device to which the antireflecting film is applied. SOLUTION: The high refractive index coating composition contains (1) metal oxide superfine particles with an average particle diameter of 1200 nm and a refractive index 1.60 or more, (2) a binder component possessing a hydrogen bond-forming group, (3) a metal compound which can form cross-linking between molecules of the binder component and (4) a solvent. The high refractive index coated film formed by using this coating composition is suitable for forming, among others, a high refractive index layer 19 which is one of the layers constituting a mono-layer type or a multi-layer type antireflecting film 17.
