PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use the result obtained by retrieving a patent document database constructed in Japanese and a Japanese retrieval expression used therefor for the formation of an English retrieval expression for patent document database retrieval constructed in English or to make available a US patent document without particularly forming the English retrieval expression by actively use the patent family relation of patent documents. SOLUTION: A retrieval is executed on a Japanese Patent document retrieval system 2 by use of the Japanese retrieval expression, and a family document number having a patent family in US is extracted from the resulting Japanese patent documents. Each keyword of the Japanese retrieval expression is translated to an English word (generally, a plurality of words), the keyword of the Japanese retrieval expression is substituted by a translated English word such that the keyword (English word) of the English word imparted to the family document is conformed thereto, whereby the English retrieval expression is formed to execute a retrieval in a US patent document retrieval system 3.
