The proposed method for measuring permanent linear deformations of materials by determining change in initial distance between two points on the material surface is characterized by making on a removable impression body (9) impressions (15) of measuring points created on the material surface and measuring precise distance of the identifiable spots of both the measuring points on the measuring point impressions. A device for making the method includes two measuring marks, fastened at a certain distance from each other onto a material to be measured, whereby it contains a fixed part (1) arranged on a material measured section (2) and a portable part (3), from which parts (2, 3) the fixed part (1) is provided with two measuring elements (7) with identifiable measuring points placed apart from each other and the portable part (3) is formed by an impression body (9) having an impression surface (10) for making impressions (15) of the measuring points.
