An apparatus and method for controlling the composition of the atmosphere within a refrigerated container (13) during the storage and/or transportation of perishable and/or respiring produce in which, a portion of the container atmosphere is withdrawn and pressurised and passed over a number of absorbents (1) to remove carbon dioxide and ethylene (and other evolved hydrocarbons). The adsorptive materials are regenerated with ambient air.
