In method of generating degrees of membership in a fuzzy inference a code of the digitised physical variable is input. The code of the digitised physical variable is split into a group of higher significant bits and a group of lower significant bits. The group of lower significant bits is directly transferred to output the degree of membership of fired fuzzy set number one, and inverted to obtain and then output the degree of membership of fired fuzzy set number two. The group of higher significant bits is directly transferred to output the index of fired fuzzy set number one, and incremented by one to obtain and then output the index of fired fuzzy set number two. A corresponding apparatus is also provided.
