A method of diagnosis of certain disease states, such as osteoporosis, associated with polymorphisms of an IL-6 gene comprises determining genotype of an IL-6 gene. A method of identifying an individual having a predisposition or susceptibility to certain disease states, such as osteoporosis, associated with polymorphisms of an IL-6 gene comprises determining genotype of an IL-6 gene. Compositions containing means, such as nucleotide primers, for determining genotype of an IL-6 gene, and the uses of such means, are also provided.
