The machine has a balancing device with at least one circular track (12) which co-rotates with the drum (2) and contains at least two freely moving weights (13). The weights are entrained in the track (12) in a drum speed range with a minimum value lower than the washing speed. A controller (6a-6d) is provided for controlling the drive motor (4) such that the drum (2) is accelerated to a spinning speed above the speed at which the washing and the drum are in contact when the center of gravity of the weights (13) lies in a preset range.
