A system and method of assessing cognitive and metacognitive skills and leadership abilities used in the creative problem solving process central to leader effectiveness. Inlcudes the steps of presenting (S10) a test subject with a scenario. The scenario is specifically designed to activate relevant schema and problem solving processes, resulting in the construction of a metal representation of the problem. A series of prompts and with accompanying response options in presented to the user (s15). Followed by the receiving a user response (S20) and providing feedback (10). The system and method quantify the abilities measured in terms of ability profiles and generate and display immediate feedback to the examinee in terms of normative profiles based on scores.
