A method for the genetic determination of resistance to β-lactam-containing antibiotics in microorganisms. The method comprises determining the ratio of: genetic material encoding an extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) compared to genetic material which does not encode an ESBL or which does not contain a mutation conferring ESBL activity on a non-ESBL; or the presence of particular nucleotide alterations in genetic sequences encoding ESBLs.
