The invention relates to a process for the continuous hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines in the liquid phase on a suspended, activated Raney catalyst based on an alloy of aluminum and at least one transition metal, selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt and nickel, and optionally one or several further transition metals, selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, chromium and manganese, working in the absence of ammonia and basic alkali or alkaline earth compounds.
