PURPOSE: Provided are a trifluoro methyl sulfonyl-based IV group transition metal catalyst for polymerizing syndiotactic styrene and a process for producing the syndiotactic styrene polymer using the catalyst. CONSTITUTION: The trifluoro methyl sulfonyl-based IV group transition metal catalyst is represented by the formula: RlM£X(SO2CF3)k|mYn, wherein M is Ti, Zr, or Hf, R is cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, fluorenyl, or derivatives thereof, Y is alkyl, aryl, allyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, and etc., X is methine, alkyl silicon, alkyl germanium, alkyl boron, O, S, and etc., l and m are integers of more than 1, n is an integer of more than 0, l+m+n is 4, and k is an integer of 1-3. And the syndiotactic styrene polymer is produced by polymerizing styrene in the presence of the catalyst and a co-catalyst selected from alkyl aluminium and alkyl aluminoxane.
