A composition containing extracts of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge useful as an inhibitor of hepatic fibrosis

PURPOSE: A composition containing an active component for inhibiting liver fibrosis obtained by screening of a liver protecting component from an extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is provided which is useful for treatment and prevention of liver cirrhosis by bilious liver fibrosis. CONSTITUTION: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is extracted in water or methanol to give an extract. For example, roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is dried and cut, and 300g cut Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is extracted in 1,800ml distilled water at 80deg.C for 3hr and filtered with 150mm filter paper to give a first filtrate. The residue is added with 1,500ml distilled water, extracted at 80deg.C for 3hr and filtered with 150mm filter paper to give a second filtrate, which is mixed with the first filtrate, left alone in a freezer at 4deg.C for 24hr to remove a precipitate and a supernatant is freeze-dried. The extract is administered to a patient suffering from liver cirrhosis, preferably 10 to 400mg/kg/day in an amount of 1 to 2,000mg/kg/day.
