A cutter blade is disclosed that is used in a surface hobbing type cutter that includes a blade shank having a cutting member provided at one end and that produces a spiral bevel and hypoid gear members by a continuous index, surface hobbing process. The cutter member includes this cutting edge with a predetermined axial compression angle and a safety edge near this cutting edge with an axial compression angle greater than the axial compression angle described above. The safety edge of the cutting member forms a safety portion at its end of the gear member, which is cut by this cutting edge of the cutting member.
