The insulation damage detection method uses application of a test voltage and optical, acoustic and/or chemical detection of arcing within a test space enclosed by a test container, which is evacuated and filled with a test gas or test gas mixture with a reduced breakdown voltage compared to air before testing. An Independent claim for an insulation damage detection device is also included.
