The polarization filter has one layer structured (2) to admit light in the polarization direction only and parts (4) of this structure are so deactivated as to freely admit light in any polarization direction as opposed to filter parts (5) which remain active and so admit light in the preset linear polarization direction only. First and second filter layers are provided and arranged in tandem along the light beam and the polarization directions intersect one another. The deactivated and active filter parts (4,5) are of identical geometry and similarly rastered, or when arranged in tandem active and deactivated parts cover one another in either arrangement. One filter layer acts as substrate and its light-permeable structure can be deactivated or wiped out by heat, preferably laser beam or again by a catalyst, e.g. water.
