(1) Poly or oligoesters comprising at least a first monomer type selected from at least a hydroxyacid substituted by a quaternary ammonium group, are new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (2) poly or oligoesters prepared from lactones of formula (II); M = trivalent organic group; R1-R3 = monovalent organic groups, which may be bound to each other to form a ring; X- = anion; (3) poly or oligoesters prepared from a lactones of formula (IV); A = divalent organic group; Y = O, NH or NR; R = monovalent organic group, preferably optionally saturated 1-22C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkyaryl or arylalkyl; (4) copolymers or oligomers prepared from at least one first lactone selected from (II) and (IV) and at least one second lactone or lactam selected from compounds of formula (V); B, D = divalent organic group; Y1, Y2 = O, NH or NR'; R' = monovalent organic group; (5) (i) poly- or oligocarnitine; (ii) poly- or oligo(carnitine-co-lactic acid); (iii) poly- or oligocarnitine-co-malic acid) or ester; (iv) poly- or oligo(carnitine-co-aspartic acid-co-lactic acid) or ester; (v) poly- or oligo(carnitine-alt-lactic acid);(vi) poly- or oligo(carnitine-alt-malic acid); (vii) poly- or oligo(carnitine-alt-aspartic acid); and(viii) poly- or oligo(carnitine-co-malic acid-co-lactic acid) or ester. (6) preparation of cationic homopolyesters or homooligoesters; (7) preparation of cationic copolyesters or cooligoesters; (8) cosmetic agent containing at least one of the above polymers or oligomers as a cosmetic base; (9) hair treatment agent containing at least one of the above polymers or oligomers.
