Automobile steering tie rod is in two telescopic sections, held together by sprung hooks and locking notches, to give an automatic inwards movement to a front wheel on a frontal collision without affecting the other wheel
The steering tie rod, especially for an automobile, is in two telescopic sections (S5,S6) to lengthen or shorten it. Hooks (S10) are fitted to the inner tie rod section (S6), to lock into notches in the outer telescopic section (S5) under spring (S9) pressure. A retainer (S7) is within the inner telescopic section, with a wedge-shaped piston (S8) over it, to open it out against a sealing ring.
