A procedure for the control of a brake device in a drive train of a vehicle is described. With activated control of the hydrodynamic retarder according to the first basic concept and the existence of a signal pointing to a possible gear change taking place and/or characterising at least indirectly a shifting process, a deactivation of the control is undertaken on generation of a constant braking torque and the control (open or closed loop) is commissioned on generation of a certain braking torque for the attainment of a constant travel speed.
