The method involves at least two light sources each projecting a light plane (4) at an identical level onto, on or into an object (5) to be monitored. Images of the light planes are formed on the surfaces in the form of lines. A data processing unit compares images generated by an image generating unit (7) with a stored reference image and produces a warning signal if differences are detected.
