The engine has individual cams (6,7) each having a control profile (10) in which a cam contour (12) radially towers above a basic circuit contour (11). Part of the gas outlet valves (3) has a contour body with additional cam contour arranged at the assigned cam (7) which can be set in active position by a setting device to tower above the basic circuit contour of the cam (7). The engine has gas inlet valves (2) and gas outlet valves operated using the camshafts (N) of individual cams.
