Apparatus for quantitative, high resolution measurement of distance, force, elasticity, pressure or acceleration comprises a laser (1) and a prism (3) from whose surface (5) light (4) is totally internally reflected, producing a homogeneous, evanescent light field with a large area. An optical wave guide (7) with a sloping end captures this light and feeds it to a photodetector (9).
