Process for coating cylinder heads for I.C. engines comprises applying powder particles to a functional layer or a local reinforcement on thermally and/or mechanically charged regions. The powder particles consist of a first component made of a base alloy, a second component with good lubricating properties and a third component with good heat conducting properties. Preferred Features: The base alloy is an alloy containing (in wt.%): 12-18 Cr, 2-4 B, 3-5 Si, up to 4 Fe and a balance of Ni or an alloy containing (in wt.%): 2-4 Ni, 1-4 Cr, 0.8-3.7 C, 3-12 Mo, and a balance of Fe, or an alloy containing (in wt.%): 25-35 Cr, 2-2.5 C, 1-4 Ni, 10-15 W and a balance of Co. The second component is made of molybdenum or a refractory metal sulfide. The third component is copper, aluminum and/or silver.
