Process for protecting metals, e.g. iron or steel against corrosion in water cooling systems comprises using a combination of 1-hydroxy-3-sulfonopropane-1, 1-diphosphonic acid or its salts and orthophosphate. An independent claim is also included for a synergistic agent for inhibiting corrosion comprising using phosphoric acid or sodium or potassium salts of phosphoric acid.
