Production of semiconductor and metal wafers comprises solidifying a melt of a semiconductor, metal or a mixture of several semiconductors and/or metals on a moving substrate. The melt has a temperature between the melting temperature of the material used and a temperature of 5 deg C above this melting temperature in the region of the substrate and a temperature gradient is adjusted in the melt. An Independent claim is also included for a device for producing semiconductor and metal wafers. Preferred Features: The melt has a temperature between the melting temperature and 1 deg C in the region of the outlet of the substrate. The temperature in the region of the substrate inlet and the temperature gradient can be sufficiently adjusted in the melt so that the metal and/or semiconductor material only begins to stabilize when it has a macroscopic flat contact with the substrate.
