The method involves receiving (110) various groups of items in succession, each with at least one item, and storing the different groups in a storage container (130). Each group (E1, E2) is associated with at least one separating device (TK1, TK2) before or during acceptance or during processing. The separating device is at least partly transferred to the container with the group of items and separates it from other groups in the container. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for accepting sheet material items, especially valuable documents such as bank notes, checks and so on, and an arrangement for accepting various groups of sheet material items.
