Changes between neutral gate (5) an a change gate (6,7), e.g. sliding and/or turning of a selector shaft, are controlled by a control device in such a way, that the movement of the shaft begins before the selector finger has reached the selected gate. A first and/or second drive to slide/turn the selector shaft, is controlled dependent upon the distances of the selector finger to the selected gate, or dependent upon actual finger speed.
