The braking method has the electronic control system (7), coupled to at least one drive unit (9) for the transport train, used for controlling operation of at least one braking unit (12), provided with brake plates which are operated hydraulically against the resetting force of at least one braking spring. The hydraulic pressure is controlled via electrically controlled braking valves, with monitoring of the movement of the brake plates into engagement with the overhead travel rail (2). An Independent claim for a braking device for a suspended overhead transport train is also included.
