Process for surface hardening metallic components comprises micro-texturing the components in points or lines in the surface region to be hardened using a laser beam. The collision site of the laser beam is enclosed in a gas atmosphere which reacts with the metal melt to form a ceramic compound. Preferred Features: A nitrogen atmosphere is used.
