Surge protection involves triggering thyristor (V4) when a critical voltage is overstepped at the intermediate capacitor (C6). Only when the intermediate circuit voltage has decreased below the maximum allowed voltage and when holding current of thyristor is understepped or current flowing through the thyristor ceases, is the thyristor (V4) switched off again. Mobile load is provided with energy of constant medium frequency current over transmission range. Load has at least one adapter with infeed for energy supply. The current is rectified in rectifier, smoothed with intermediate circuit choke and merged to form intermediate circuit current. According to need of load, the merged intermediate circuit current is fed by switch (V1) either to capacitor buffering the output voltage of adapter or is fed off before the capacitor. The voltage is compared at the capacitor with a fixed or predetermined value, if it is above this value a power switch/thyristor (V4) is switched on to lead off the intermediate circuit current. Thyristor is only turned off again when its holding current is understepped or when current is blocked. INDEPENDENT CLAIM for device to protect load from surge.
