An ignition coil (1) has a first end section (2) for supplying electrical power, a coil body (4) containing a transformer device (9-11) to transform the electrical power supplied and a second end section (12) for making electrical contact with a spark plug in order to feed the spark plug with electrical power supplied by the transformer device. Both the first and second end sections can be connected and disconnected to and from the coil body. An Independent claim is also included for a method for operating an ignition coil.
