Storing articles (11) of different sizes and shapes on shelves (4) without sorting comprises passing them through an identification unit (12) where its dimensions are measured. A loading unit (13) is moved horizontally and vertically to unload the article into a suitable space on the shelves. An identification code is applied in the identification unit and this is stored, allowing individual items to be removed when required.
