Method for automatic guidance of motor vehicle in which the lateral distance of a vehicle from a guide line is measured using a distance measurement device attached to the vehicle and measurement value for the distance produced. The direction of the vehicle is determined using a compass and the distance signal and driving direction signal compared with each other in a signal analysis unit so that an adjustment signal for control of an automatic steering device can be generated.
