Method in which deformation of the fuel tank (2) caused by the fuel (9) within it is measured using one or more strain gauges (14). Connected to the strain gauges is a controller (16) that determines the volume of fuel in the tank from changes in the characteristics of the strain gauges and determines the range of the vehicle for the calculated fuel volume. An Independent claim is made for an arrangement for determining the fuel level and thus the remaining range of a motor vehicle.
