A coating material (I) for coating base paper consists essentially of a micropore-forming component. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a method for the production of (I) by making a finely-divided dispersion of swellable, crosslinked, highly-carboxylated acrylate polymer, adjusting to pH 7-8.5, mixing the dispersion of swollen, crosslinked gel particles with starch solution and adjusting to pH 8.0; and (b) a method for coating base paper with (I) in which material (I) is applied without contact.
