Method for characterization of a test device (DUT) using a network analyzer has the following steps: measurement of a transmission coefficient for transfer of a signal from a first to a second gate and determination of a transmission coefficient for transfer of a signal from the second gate to the first gate without having to actually measure it, but determining it instead from the first coefficient. The transmission coefficient from second to first gate is determined from the measured coefficient by an error correction step followed by gate matching normalization.
