Two sidewalls(1,2) are welded together at the side edges(3) and a reinforcing strip(7) with a gripping hole(10) is located at the upper end of each sidewall below the bag opening(6). Each reinforcing strip comprises a fastening part(8) and a gripping hole part(9). The fastening part is attached below the upper edge of each sidewall with the gripping hole part(9) projecting above the upper edge. An Independent claim is also included for a process for manufacturing the carrier bag in which: (a) the upper layer of a double layer film strip is folded over around a base center line(5); (b) reinforcing strips(7) are fastened to the longitudinal free edges of both the lower layer and the upper folded-over layer so that gripping hole parts(9) of each project beyond the sidewall edges and cover each other when the upper layer is folded over; (c) the folded-over part of the upper layer is opened out again and a gripping hole punched in the reinforcing strip; (d) a combined sidewall edge(3) welding and cutting operation completes each bag and cuts it from the double walled film strip. Preferred Features: The rectangular fastening part(8) is bonded or welded onto the inner side of each sidewall(1,2).
