A compound represented by general formula (I), a complex compound composed of the above compound and a metallic atom, and a diagnostic agent containing the complex compound, wherein m represents an integer of 1 to 3, R1 and R2 may be the same or different from each other and each represents hydrogen or lower alkyl, and R3, R4, R5 and R6 may be the same or different from one another and each represents hydroxy or (II), wherein n represents 0 or 1, X represents - NH- or -O-, Y represents alkylene, A represents hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halogen or trifluoromethyl, and B represents alkyl or alkenyl, provided that two or three of the groups R3, R4, R5 and R6 are hydroxy and that when two of them are hydroxy groups, then the cases where R3 and R5 are hydroxy and where R4 and R6 are hydroxy are excluded. The first-mentioned compound is useful as a chelating agent and the complex compound has excellent characteristics as a contrast medium for diagnostic imaging. CHEM
