A metathesis polymerization catalyst solution which is one part of a metathesis polymerization catalyst system comprising two or more parts for use in a method of obtaining a cross-linked polymer composition. The metathesis polymerization catalyst solution is prepared by mixing an ether compound, a phenol compound, at least one of WOCl4 and MoOCl3 and a metathesis polymerizable cyclic olefin as a solvent, and the ether compound and the phenol compound are made to act on the at least one of WOCl4 and MoOCl3. The cross-linked polymer composition is formed by (1) mixing a monomer solution A (solution A) comprising a metathesis polymerizable cyclic olefin and a catalyst component of the metathesis polymerization catalyst system, and a monomer solution B (solution B) comprising a metathesis polymerizable cyclic olefin and an alkylaluminum compound as an activator component of the metathesis polymerization catalyst system; and (2) polymerizing and cross-linking the mixture in a mold. The invention provides a stable metathesis polymerization catalyst solution which reduces offensive odor of the molded article as well as fumes generated at the molding site, and also improves physical properties such as heat resistance. In a preferred embodiment, an ether compound is used together with the activator component as a reaction velocity modulator.
