The steam discharge valve (12) is a pressure valve, with the steam pressure causing the valve, against a spring bias, to open to direct steam to the steam opening (4), with an arrangement to manually adjust the quantity of steam discharged. The iron comprises a sole plate having a steam opening, oriented in the direction of the cloth to be ironed, and having a steam discharge valve, by which the steam is passed when the valve is opened.
