Bio-compatible polymer for use in medicine and implant surgery has porous three-dimensional structure with communicating cells and is transformed from liquid into gellified or solid or hydrogel state
Porous three-dimensional structure with communicating cells, consisting of at least one bio-compatible polymer in hydrogel form, and the process of its production are new. Porous three-dimensional structure with communicating cells, consisting of at least one bio-compatible polymer in hydrogel form is produced by a) making frit of required porosity and geometry, of water-soluble or hydrolyzable substance, non-soluble in polymer solvent but soluble in polymer non-solvent, b) preparation of solution of polymer in polymer solvent, c) impregnation of frit with polymer solution, d) subjecting frit impregnated with polymer solution to physical conditions resulting in transformation of bio-compatible polymer from liquid state into gellified or solid state or hydrogel incorporating initial water-soluble or hydrolyzable substance, e) dissolving or hydrolyzing the frit by immersion of the mixture in polymer non-solvent, and f) recovering the polymer of required geometry and porosity, in form of hydrogel (variant I). Alternatively, the process comprises a) preparation of water-soluble or hydrolyzable substance, non-soluble in polymer solvent and soluble in polymer non-solvent, in form of particles of desired size and shape, b) as above for variant I, c) making heterogeneous mixture of polymer solution and water-soluble or hydrolyzable substance, in mold, c) subjecting mold to such physical conditions as to cause transformation of bio-compatible polymer from liquid state into gellified or solid state or hydrogel, d) extracting obtained mixture, including water-soluble or hydrolyzable substances, from mold, e) as above and f) as above. Independent claims are also included for 1) porous three-dimensional structure with communicating cells consisting of at least one bio-compatible polymer and comprising multiple cavities communicating with each other as well as with the surface of the structure, the polymer existing in liquid and gellified or solid state, and having form of hydrogel; and 2) use of structure as claimed for making bio-artificial cartilage or filling-up bone loss, or for making bio-artificial pancreas, or making of implantable reactor for production of therapeutical substances in vivo, or in making of breast prosthesis, or filling up deficiency of cartilagineous tissue, or in controlled release of active components of medicines.
